We’d already started developing the RPM mythology and main story when the Free Comic Book Day opportunity came up, which posed an interesting problem — with the main story focusing on a new RPM recruit, how could we feature him in an RPM short without either forecasting the main series or sidelining our hero? The answer: focus on the other team members, before our hero joins up, and give new readers a taste of RPM action and the RPM/Scorpion rivalry without giving away anything from the main story. This story is a kind of prequel, using HR is a pivot character to move from the Mega-Mini Islands Race to recruiting a very special new RPM member when the main story begins…

Buckle up, Buttercup! We’re off to the raucous races, jumping right into the middle of RPM continuity with this special six-page adventure that first appeared in Ape’s Free Comic Book Day 2009 offering, Cartoonapalooza. After we rock through this RPM Primer story, we’ll be starting the comic proper with all-new material in a few short weeks! In the meantime, meet Prop (our stalwart speedboat pilot, RPM’s undisputed queen of water racing) and Junker (the slovenly brute of RPM’s rival organization Scorpion) — in the middle of the Mega-Mini Islands Race, and locked in mortal combat! In the desperate race for alien artifacts scattered around the earth’s surface, Junker has beaten Prop to the punch — will he blow her to the bottom of the ocean as well?
